Kaduna State’s water production has increased significantly, from 8% to over 30%, in the last two and a half years, according to Governor Uba Sani. This improvement is a result of a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s water infrastructure. The Governor made this disclosure during a courtesy visit from the management of the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI).
Governor Sani attributed the sector’s past struggles to systemic neglect, which led to dormant treatment plants and compromised distribution networks. However, his administration has invested heavily in revamping the state’s water infrastructure, committing between 93 billion and 100 billion over the next four years. This investment aims to ensure a steady and reliable supply of clean water to every household in Kaduna State by late 2026.
The state government has already spent over 5 billion replacing pipes lost to vandalism and damage during past urban renewal projects in Zaria and Kafanchan. An additional 10 billion is being invested in replacing priority and critical pipelines for Kaduna. Furthermore, the government has invested 1.4 billion in high-quality water purification chemicals and cleared 1.3 billion in outstanding electricity bills to guarantee uninterrupted operations.
The Governor also emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of workers in the water sector, having cleared salary arrears of over 900 million for Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC) staff. He has also approved the allocation of land for a Mass Housing Project in Millennium City, Kaduna, to provide housing for water sector professionals.
The state government plans to collaborate with the NWRI to ensure long-term sustainability, which requires both infrastructure and expertise. To this end, the Governor has allocated land for the establishment of NWRI branches in Zaria and Kachia, which will provide training and bridge critical gaps in the state’s water sector. The NWRI, recognized as a World Metrological Centre in Africa, will offer complimentary forms to the Kaduna State Government for short-term courses, with beneficiaries paying only 50% of the registration fees.
The partnership between the Kaduna State Government and the NWRI is expected to enhance the state’s water sector, ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of clean water to its citizens. With the ongoing investments and collaborations, the state is on track to achieve its goal of 100% water coverage by late 2026.
