The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has clarified that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has not resigned from the party. According to the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the governor’s resignation letter was not addressed to the authentic National Working Committee (NWC) of the NNPP, but rather to a member of the Kwankwasiya Movement in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.
Aniebonam stated that the NNPP NWC does not recognize the Kwankwasiya movement ward chairman as chairman of the party. The clarification comes after reports emerged that Governor Yusuf had resigned from the party, along with 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen.
In his resignation letter, Yusuf cited his decision to leave the party, effective January 23, 2026. However, Aniebonam insists that the resignation is not recognized by him as the NNPP founder, leader, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He noted that the party had lifted the governor’s suspension from its membership and directed him to take responsibility for its leadership.
Aniebonam cited court rulings, including those from the Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Aniebonam-led Board of Trustees. He emphasized that the NNPP is a registered political party, while the Kwankwasiya Movement is only a pressure group.
The NNPP founder stressed that elected officials in Kano won their seats on the party’s platform, with the logo of a basket of fruits, and not the Kwankwasiya insignia of a book and red color. He attributed the crisis in Kano to the “high-handedness” of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiya Movement.
Aniebonam urged party members to remain calm and committed as the NNPP looks ahead to the 2027 general elections. The party’s leadership will likely continue to navigate the ongoing crisis, with a focus on resolving internal conflicts and preparing for the upcoming elections. The situation in Kano State is being closely watched, with implications for the political landscape in Nigeria.
