Abia Leaders Warn Against Sharing Personal Data

Local government officials in Abia State, Nigeria, have warned residents to protect their personal data, including Permanent Voter’s Cards, National Identification Numbers, Bank Verification Numbers, and bank account details, from unauthorized individuals or groups. Chinedu Enwereuzo, Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, cautioned that sharing such sensitive information can expose individuals to fraud, identity theft, and other criminal activities.

According to Enwereuzo, no government agency has authorized the collection of this information from the public. Similarly, Chinedu Ekeke, Chairman of Isuikwuato Local Government Area, reported that some individuals have been demanding sensitive personal information from residents, allegedly in the name of a political party’s registration. This collection of personal data has been carried out during party registration exercises, voter registration drives, town hall meetings, and community outreach programs.

Ekeke emphasized that no individual, group, or political organization has the legal authority to collect such information from citizens in this manner. In response to these allegations, Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, denied that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is involved in buying people’s National Identification Numbers or other personal details in Abia during the ongoing e-registration.

The warnings from local government officials highlight the importance of protecting personal data and the potential risks associated with sharing sensitive information with unauthorized individuals or groups. As the electoral process continues, it is essential for citizens to be cautious and ensure that their personal data is not compromised. The alleged collection of personal data by unauthorized individuals or groups has raised concerns about the security and integrity of the electoral process in Abia State. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
