Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh reveals training struggles

Former Nigerian national team coach, Sunday Oliseh, has spoken out about the challenges he faced during his tenure as the Super Eagles’ coach. Oliseh, a former Juventus player, took over as coach in 2015 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. He has revealed that the lack of basic training equipment made his job significantly more difficult.

In an interview on his YouTube channel, Oliseh’s Global Football Insights Podcast, he highlighted the tough conditions he encountered while working with the team. “When I was coaching the Super Eagles, we didn’t have the equipment,” he stated. The team often had to postpone training sessions due to a lack of extra jerseys, forcing them to wait for the ones they had already worn to dry. Oliseh recalled instances where he had to adjust the team’s training schedule to accommodate the drying of uniforms, which had been washed and needed time to dry.

The situation was particularly surprising for Oliseh, given Nigeria’s strong presence in international football. “It was surprising to me because I knew that a strong country like ours should not have trouble getting sponsors,” he said. Despite these challenges, Oliseh’s time with the Super Eagles was largely successful. He led the CHAN Eagles to qualify for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda and achieved positive results with the senior team, losing only two games and scoring 19 goals in 14 matches before his departure in February 2016.

Oliseh’s experience highlights the need for adequate resources and support for Nigeria’s national football teams. The country’s football federation has faced criticism in the past for its handling of the team’s logistics and preparation. Oliseh’s revelations serve as a reminder of the importance of providing coaches and players with the necessary tools to succeed at the international level.
