Nigerians Set to Determine 2027 Election Outcome, Says Aregbesola
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has emphasized that the outcome of the polls will be determined by the people. Aregbesola made this statement during the launch of ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi’s memoir, “The Loyalist in Abuja.” The former Osun State governor warned that defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may not guarantee electoral victory, stressing that “governors do not win elections, the people do.”
Aregbesola urged the authorities to ensure credible polls, emphasizing that the results should reflect the popular will of the people nationwide. He also cautioned against the assumption that political loyalty can be guaranteed by party affiliation, highlighting the importance of conscience, experience, and democratic participation in shaping loyalty.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who was the special guest of honor at the occasion, commended the author for exploring the concept of loyalty in the context of Nigerian politics. Abubakar noted that true loyalty must prioritize inclusion, accountability, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ dignity. He also emphasized the importance of leaders listening to dissenting voices and engaging with diverse opinions.
The launch of Abdullahi’s memoir brought together prominent figures, including Senator David Mark, who described the author as a patriotic and selfless individual. Mark emphasized that rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges is a collective task that requires the efforts of all citizens. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, also attended the event, pledging strong representation for the South-East region and encouraging Nigerians to write more about their experiences.
The discussion highlighted the need for a new alternative in Nigerian politics, with the ADC presenting itself as a broad coalition to renew democracy. As the country approaches the 2027 elections, the emphasis on credible polls, citizen participation, and inclusive leadership is likely to remain a central theme in the national conversation. With the electoral landscape evolving, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the political parties and leaders respond to the call for change and accountability.
