Nollywood actress Angela Okorie arrested for cyberbullying Mercy Johnson

Nigerian actress Angela Okorie was arrested at her Lagos residence on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, by operatives from the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Center, Abuja. According to journalist Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, Okorie was taken into custody in connection with a cybercrime matter involving fellow actress Mercy Johnson.

Oloketuyi disclosed on his Instagram page that Okorie spent the night at the Yaba police station in Lagos before being transported to Abuja on an early morning flight. The arrest is reportedly linked to allegations of cyberbullying against Mercy Johnson and her family. This development comes just a week after Johnson announced that she would no longer tolerate online harassment and bullying.

The Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre, Abuja, is handling the case, and Okorie is expected to face court proceedings. The arrest highlights the growing concern about cybercrime and online harassment in Nigeria, particularly among public figures. The country’s cybercrime laws aim to protect individuals from online threats, including bullying, harassment, and defamation.

Mercy Johnson had recently spoken out against cyberbullying, stating that it would not be tolerated in 2026. Her announcement was seen as a call to action against online harassment, which has become a significant issue in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. The arrest of Angela Okorie serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in cybercrime and the importance of respecting individuals’ online boundaries.

As the case unfolds, it is expected that more details will emerge about the allegations against Okorie and the court proceedings. The incident has sparked a conversation about the need for accountability and responsible behavior online, particularly among public figures who have a significant following and influence. The Nigerian authorities’ efforts to tackle cybercrime and online harassment are crucial in creating a safer online environment for all citizens.
