Rangers Defender Onyebuchi Rejects Tunisian Move, Citing Loyalty to Nigerian Club

Enugu Rangers International FC defender Ifeanyi Onyebuchi has confirmed he turned down an offer to join a club in the Tunisian Premier League to remain with the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) giants for the remainder of the season.

Onyebuchi, an experienced centre-back, recently re-signed with Rangers for the second half of the NPFL campaign, marking his return to the eight-time Nigerian champions. His decision to spurn interest from North Africa is framed by a stated commitment to the club he describes as deeply significant.

“Rangers is not just a club; it means a lot to me,” Onyebuchi told the Nigerian Player Gallery. “For sure I will leave the club when the time comes, but for now I am going nowhere. We will see what will happen at the end of the season.”

The player emphasized that his current focus is on contributing to the team’s objectives. He indicated a pragmatic approach to his future, stating he would consider a transfer if a superior offer emerged. “If a better offer comes, I will speak with the club and I believe I will leave happily,” he added. “I want to say goodbye to our fans in a respectful way at the cathedral, because they gave me everything,” he remarked, referring to the team’s iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

Onyebuchi’s return bolsters a Rangers defence aiming to secure a strong finish in the NPFL. His choice highlights a player prioritizing immediate club commitment over a potentially lucrative overseas move, a narrative of loyalty that resonates in Nigerian football culture. The club’s management has not commented on the reported Tunisian interest.

The situation underscores a common scenario for established NPFL players: balancing personal career progression with club loyalty during the transfer windows. Onyebuchi’s public sentiment suggests his immediate future lies with Rangers, with any potential departure to be handled with consideration for the club and its supporters. His performance in the coming matches will be closely watched as Rangers pursue their campaign goals.
