South Africa Expels Israeli Diplomat, Israel Retaliates

South Africa has expelled Israel’s top diplomat in the country, a move immediately met with reciprocal action by Israel, further straining relations between the two nations.

South Africa’s Department of International Relations announced that Ariel Seidman, Israel’s chargé d’affaires, was declared persona non grata and given 72 hours to depart. The department stated the expulsion was due to a series of violations of diplomatic norms. These included using official Israeli social media accounts to launch insulting attacks against South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and a “deliberate failure” to inform South African authorities about visits by senior Israeli officials.

Seidman had been Israel’s most senior diplomatic representative in South Africa since the recall of its ambassador in 2023. In direct retaliation, Israel declared South Africa’s senior diplomat, Shaun Edward Byneveldt, persona non grata and ordered his departure within the same timeframe.

The diplomatic rupture occurs against the backdrop of a long-running dispute over the war in Gaza. South Africa filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in late 2023, accusing Israel of acts of genocide. Israel has consistently denied the allegations, labeling the case a politically motivated campaign orchestrated in partnership with Hamas, which South Africa rejects.

Analysts note that the expulsion is likely to intensify diplomatic tensions and draw scrutiny from the United States, Israel’s key ally. Under the Trump administration, relations with South Africa have significantly deteriorated. Washington has criticized Pretoria’s ICJ case and its foreign policy positions, even suggesting South Africa is aligning with Iran and Hamas—allegations South Africa firmly denies.

This bilateral clash represents the latest escalation in a relationship marked by deep ideological disagreement. With both nations now reducing their diplomatic representation, the path to dialogue appears severely constrained. The episode underscores how international legal battles and domestic political rhetoric can rapidly dismantle formal diplomatic channels, with regional and global powers closely monitoring the fallout.
