Lafarge Africa Expands Cement Production in Nigeria

Lafarge Africa Plc has announced the expansion of its Sagamu Cement Plant in Ogun State and Ashaka Cement Plant in Gombe State, a move aimed at significantly boosting local production capacity to support Nigeria’s infrastructure and construction demands. The company, a major manufacturer of cement and building solutions, confirmed the projects involve constructing new dry plants featuring modern equipment such as preheater kilns, vertical raw mills, and roller presses to enhance energy efficiency and operational performance.

According to a notice filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited and signed by Company Secretary Adewunmi Alode, the Sagamu plant’s annual capacity will increase to 3.5 million metric tonnes, while Ashaka will reach 2 million metric tonnes upon completion. This expansion is expected to improve product availability and enable Lafarge Africa to serve customers more effectively across key regional markets, responding to sustained demand in housing, commercial construction, and infrastructure projects.

The initiative follows the acquisition of an 83.81% stake in Lafarge Africa by Huaxin Building Materials Group last year, underscoring foreign investment confidence in Nigeria’s economic trajectory. Group Managing Director and CEO Lolu Alade-Akinyemi highlighted that the projects reflect long-term belief in the country’s growth potential. “The expansion of our plants is a strategic investment that reinforces Lafarge Africa’s role in supporting national development,” he said, noting that the upgrades deliver operational and sustainability benefits while fostering value creation for customers and shareholders.

Alade-Akinyemi explained that integrating advanced production technologies will improve efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance, aligning with responsible operations. The efforts aim to strengthen the supply chain, enhance market responsiveness, and contribute to economic activity and job creation in host communities and the broader construction ecosystem.

Lafarge Africa emphasized its focus on disciplined execution and transparent stakeholder engagement as it advances these investments to fortify its operations nationwide. The expansion arrives amid Nigeria’s push to address infrastructure gaps, with cement being a critical component for urbanization and development projects. By scaling production at these flagship facilities, Lafarge Africa positions itself to play a central role in meeting the nation’s building material needs, potentially stabilizing supply and supporting sectoral growth in the medium to long term.
