The chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Lauretta Onochie, pledged to support the commission’s efforts to build women’s capacity in the region. Speaking at the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt, she welcomed members of the chairman’s team who had won the MD’s Cup for female teams during a five‑day football tournament organized by the commission in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The remarks were included in a statement signed by NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs Dr. Ibitoye Abosede and released to the press.

Chairman Onochie commended the team for their participation, emphasizing that “it’s not about winning but about participating.” She added, “The victory is for the whole board. It is time we let Nigerians know that good things can happen in the NDDC. These women are very strong.” She expressed delight that the players represented her and performed admirably, noting, “Not only did you participate, you also put the icing on the cake by bringing back the cup for me.”

Onochie announced that the NDDC will soon establish a committee to articulate the specific needs of women in the Niger Delta. “Let us come together to do the best we can for the Niger Delta. Sports is a very good thing. Having won this cup, I’m sure it gives the players so much joy,” she said. She highlighted that the team not only secured the cup but also earned individual performance trophies.

Recognizing March as the International Month of Women, the chairman called on parents to raise their children without gender discrimination. When presenting the trophy to the NDDC chairman, the team’s leader, Mrs. Gift Ikechukwu, thanked Onochie for receiving the team members and for the support they received during the tournament.
