Nollywood Actress Angela Okorie Apologizes to Mercy Johnson Following Cyberbullying Arrest
Nigerian actress Angela Okorie has issued a public apology to her colleague Mercy Johnson Okojie, following her arrest and brief detention over allegations of cyberbullying.
The incident began on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, when operatives from the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Center in Abuja arrested Okorie at her residence in Lagos. She was subsequently arraigned and remanded in Suleja Prison by an Abuja court on January 29.
Her release came swiftly. On Friday, January 30, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Okorie bail. Justice Emeka Nwite approved the bail application filed by her lawyer, Earnest Nwoye, setting the bond at N5 million with one surety of equivalent financial standing.
Following her release, Okorie shared a heartfelt video message directly addressing Johnson. In the message, she acknowledged the dispute, stating, “I am not perfect, and I want to apologize. If it’s my words, anything I’ve written, anytime your name pops up on social media, I am deeply sorry.” She rejected the negative labels previously attached to Johnson, saying, “You are not a witch… I just want to make peace.” Okorie further emphasized her intent to cease all hostile communications, adding, “I do not condone bullying… I will never listen to gossip about you again.”
The apology video, which has circulated widely on social media, frames the reconciliation as a personal and maternal decision. Okorie noted that their children could potentially become friends, stating, “as mothers, we cannot stop that.”
This case highlights the increasinglegal accountability for online conduct among public figures in Nigeria. The swift police action and court proceedings signal a stringent approach to cybercrime, including cyberbullying. Okorie’s public apology and the bail conditions now set the stage for her ongoing legal process, while simultaneously attempting to mend a high-profile personal rift within Nollywood. The resolution of the criminal charges will depend on the subsequent directions of the Abuja court.
