Kaiama Attack Police Investigation Begins, Over 100 Dead

Police Launch Full Investigation into Fatal Attack on Nigerian Communities

A full-scale investigation is underway into an attack on two communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria, that resulted in over 100 fatalities. The police inquiry aims to identify and prosecute those responsible for the incident, which occurred on February 3, 2026.

Commissioner of Police for Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the launch of the investigation in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Thursday. The police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, encouraging them to provide credible information via dedicated emergency lines to support ongoing operations.

The attack targeted the Woro community at approximately 1730 hours on February 3. According to preliminary findings, assailants, suspected to be religious extremists, stormed the area, engaging in sporadic gunfire that killed residents. The attackers also set fire to houses and shops. The victims were subsequently given a mass burial.

In response to the violence, a high-level delegation visited the affected community the following day. Kwara State Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq was accompanied by Commissioner of Police Ojo, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Michael Oganwu, and the Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brig. Gen N.N. Rume, among other senior security and government officials. The visit was for an on-the-spot assessment and to commiserate with the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar, and families of the victims.

To enhance security and prevent further incidents, a Joint Security Team comprising police, military personnel, and National Forest Guards has been deployed to Kaiama LGA. The team is tasked with maintaining law and order and reassuring residents of their safety.

Commissioner Ojo extended condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire Woro community, praying for the repose of the victims’ souls. The police command reiterates its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and calls on the public to share information by calling 07032069501 or 08125275046.

The attack underscores persistent security challenges in parts of Nigeria and the intensified multi-agency deployment signals a concerted effort to restore stability in the Kaiama region.
