Kun Khalifat Football Club has reversed its decision to withdraw from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), following disciplinary action taken against the Owerri-based club earlier this week.
The club had initially announced its withdrawal on Wednesday, reacting to sanctions imposed by the NPFL for failing to fulfill its Matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri on Monday. The league’s disciplinary committee found Kun Khalifat FC in breach of regulations, resulting in the forfeiture of the match. Consequently, the club was stripped of three points and three goals in favour of El-Kanemi Warriors. Additionally, a fine of ten million naira (₦10 million) was levied.
However, after what the club described as “constructive talks” with NPFL management, Kun Khalifat FC rescinded its withdrawal. The discussions appear to have clarified the path forward regarding the penalties and the club’s ongoing participation in the league.
This reversal ensures that Kun Khalifat FC will proceed with its scheduled Matchday 25 fixture. The team is set to face Shooting Stars Sports Club at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri on Sunday.
The incident highlights the NPFL’s ongoing enforcement of its operational codes, particularly regarding team travel and match commitments. Forfeitures and financial penalties are standard sanctions for unexcused absences, aimed at maintaining the league’s competitive integrity and schedule. Kun Khalifat FC’s brief withdrawal and subsequent return underscore the financial and sporting pressures facing clubs in Nigeria’s top flight, where participation is crucial for revenue, visibility, and potential survival in the league.
The outcome of the talks allowed the club to avoid the more severe consequence of exclusion from the remainder of the season. While the specific terms of the resolution beyond the reversal remain undisclosed, the club must still contend with the three-point deduction and the substantial fine, which will impact its position in the NPFL table. The focus now shifts to Sunday’s match, where Kun Khalifat FC will begin the process of on-field recovery from this administrative setback.
