Abia Pensioners: Otti Need Not Campaign, Achievements Win 2027

Abia Pensioners Back Governor Otti’s Re-election, Urge Focus on Governance Over 2027 Campaigns

A group representing retirees in Abia State has publicly thrown its support behind Governor Alex Otti for a second term, urging him to prioritise governance over political campaigning for the 2027 elections. The Concerned Abia Pensioners, speaking at their bi-weekly meeting in Umuahia, asserted that the governor’s performance in office would naturally secure his re-election.

The group’s coordinator, Emeka Okezie, stated that Governor Otti had “done more than expected within the space of less than three years,” making extensive campaign spending unnecessary. They expressed confidence that any attempt by political opponents to manipulate the 2027 electoral outcome in the state would fail, describing it as “hard to rig out” the incumbent governor.

This endorsement follows years of hardship for the state’s pensioners under previous administrations, which they attributed to the alleged non-payment of pensions and gratuities. The retirees reminded Governor Otti of a specific promise he made in 2025 to clear their outstanding gratuities, expressing hope that he would fulfill this commitment.

In addition to their support for the governor, the group appealed to the state government to intervene in a separate ongoing issue. They lamented that the outgoing executive of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Abia State has allegedly locked the union’s state office for several years. This has forced the pensioners to conduct their meetings in open fields, a situation they described as undignified and unsustainable.

The pensioners’ statement highlights two interconnected themes: the political capital a governor can gain from addressing long-standing public sector debts, and the persistent administrative challenges facing organised labour in the state. Their public backing of Governor Otti is framed around his perceived responsiveness to their plight, contrasting sharply with the neglect they reported under prior governments.

As Abia State looks toward the 2027 general election, the stance of influential demographic groups like organised pensioners may signal broader public sentiment on governance issues. The retirees’ call for the governor to avoid premature campaign expenditures suggests a desire for sustained focus on policy delivery, particularly regarding public sector financial obligations. Their appeal regarding the locked NUP office also underscores ongoing governance and administrative hurdles that persist beyond the governor’s initial term.
