Trump Praises Orban as Powerful Leader for Hungary Election

US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of the country’s parliamentary election scheduled for April. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described Orban as a “truly strong and powerful leader” and a “close ally” and “true friend,” citing achievements in economic growth, job creation, trade, and border security. This marks Trump’s second formal endorsement of Orban, following his support during the 2022 election cycle.

The election presents a significant challenge to Orban’s long-standing conservative governance. His Fidesz party, in power since 2010, faces a unified opposition for the first time in over a decade. The pro-European Union Tisza Party, led by former insider Peter Magyar, has emerged as the primary challenger. A February poll by 21 Kutatokozpont indicated the Tisza Party leading Fidesz by seven percentage points, with 35% to 28% support respectively.

Orban’s relationship with the European Union remains deeply strained, primarily over policy toward the Ukraine conflict. His government has consistently opposed and at times blocked EU initiatives, including military aid for Kyiv and plans to use frozen Russian assets. Budapest has also criticized sweeping sanctions on Moscow and Western weapons deliveries. Orban has warned that a Tisza Party victory would lead Hungary toward a more confrontational stance with Russia, alleging it would “end up taking our children to war.”

The Hungarian leader, who previously served from 1998 to 2002 and returned to power in 2010, is the nation’s longest-serving prime minister. He has positioned himself as a defender of national sovereignty against what he terms “well-mannered European academics” and “stagnant” international institutions.

The upcoming vote is thus a pivotal moment for Hungary’s domestic political trajectory and its fractious relationship with the EU and NATO allies. The result will determine whether Orban continues his eurosceptic, sovereignist agenda or if Hungary pivots toward a more integrated European policy, with implications for the bloc’s collective stance on the war in Ukraine and broader security cooperation.
