Lagos Police Detain Officers Over Assault on Actor Ijoba Lande

Lagos State Police Command has detained several officers for an internal investigation following allegations they assaulted well-known Nigerian actor and content creator Ganiyu Morufu, popularly known as Ijoba Lande. The development confirmes that law enforcement is responding to a viral incident that sparked public outcry over police conduct.

The case stems from a video widely shared on social media, which shows Morufu with visible injuries, including a bleeding facial wound, while seated in a vehicle. In the footage, heard speaking Yoruba, the actor requests water as bystanders advise him to report the matter at a police station. A voice in the background attributes the assault to personnel from the Area “J” Police Division in Lagos, condemning it as a wrongful act. The clip concludes with the group arriving at a police facility, where Morufu appears more composed.

Further allegations detailed in the video’s caption claim the officers robbed Morufu of his iPhone 16 Pro Max and $1,200 in cash belonging to his brother. The caption states the actor was attacked shortly after returning from the UK, asserting, “I nearly lost my life.”

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident in a statement on February 6, 2026. She disclosed that the involved officers have been identified and are present at the command for questioning. “At present, the officers, the complainant, and his friend are all giving their statements,” the statement read, adding that further updates will be issued as the probe advances.

The police command has assured the public that the matter is being treated with seriousness and that appropriate disciplinary action will follow the investigation’s findings. This case highlights persistent concerns regarding accountability within Nigeria’s police force and the safety of citizens during law enforcement interactions. The outcome of the internal probe is anticipated to determine whether criminal charges will be pursued against the implicated officers.
