Nigerian Minister Warns Politicians Supporting ‘Betrayal’ Will Face Consequences
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a stark warning to politicians he accuses of supporting acts of political betrayal, suggesting they will inevitably experience similar treatment.
Speaking on Saturday during the commissioning of the Rivers State chapter office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Port Harcourt, Wike directly addressed senators, members of the House of Representatives, governors, and other officials. He stated that those who allegedly support treacherous political maneuvers will themselves be betrayed in due course.
“Whether you are a senator, House of Reps member, minister or governor, and you support betrayals, people will continue to betray you in life. Betrayal is your portion,” Wike said. He elaborated that when such politicians face their own betrayal, they will be left without recourse. “The day you will be betrayed, you will not have mouth to say anything. There you will collapse and go and they will announce that so so person has died.”
The minister framed his warning in deterministic terms, invoking the principle of reaping what one sows. “That is the seed you have planted and whatever you plant, you will reap. Since you are planting betrayal, betrayal will follow you everywhere.” He specifically targeted governors in their second tenure or those seeking to impose successors, declaring, “You will never survive it.”
Wike, a former two-term governor of Rivers State and a prominent figure in the nation’s political landscape, did not specify particular individuals or recent incidents he was referencing. His comments come amid ongoing realignments and tensions within political parties, particularly in his influential home state where control of the political structure is fiercely contested.
The speech underscores the cyclical and often personal nature of political conflict in Nigeria, where accusations of betrayal are common and retaliation is frequently anticipated. Wike’s remarks suggest a belief that political alliances built on perceived disloyalty are inherently unstable and destined to fail.
The significance of the warning lies in Wike’s continued clout within Rivers State and national politics. As the FCT Minister and a key player in the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), his pronouncements often influence political calculations. His prediction of political ruin for those involved in “betrayal” signals a potential hardening of positions and could heighten anxieties among politicians navigating complex loyalty dynamics ahead of future elections.
The event, held at the office of a group aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, provided a high-profile platform for Wike to deliver this message of political causality to a supportive audience.
