IPOB Permanently Ends Monday Sit-at-Home in South-East

IPOB Ends Decades-Long Monday Sit-At-Home Directive in Nigeria’s South-East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the permanent cancellation of its contentious Monday “sit-at-home” order, a policy that has periodically shut down economic and social life in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone for years. The directive, issued by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, is effective immediately and represents a significant shift in the group’s tactics.

According to an official IPOB statement released on Sunday, the order to cease the weekly enforcement measures comes directly from Kanu, who remains the movement’s figurehead despite his ongoing detention and legal proceedings. The communiqué instructed residents of the five South-East states—Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo—to resume all normal activities from Monday, February 9, 2026, without fear. This includes returning to work, opening businesses, sending children to school, and restoring full transport services.

“The era of Monday sit-at-home is over,” the statement declared, adding that any individual or group attempting to enforce the shutdown after this notice would be acting against Kanu’s explicit instructions.

The Monday sit-at-home, formally instituted in 2021, was often observed under coercion and resulted in weekly disruptions across the region. While sometimes framed as a protest tactic, its practical effect was a near-total halt to formal economic activity every Monday. Key sectors including banking, commerce, education, and transportation were consistently immobilized, leading to substantial financial losses and deterring investment.

The policy faced consistent criticism from regional governors, business associations, and civil society groups, who argued it crippled the local economy and violated constitutional rights to movement and association. Some state governments had previously threatened sanctions against public servants who refused to work on Mondays, challenging the unofficial lockdowns.

IPOB’s reversal removes a major source of instability in the region. The immediate focus will now be on the practical implementation of the cancellation and whether the directive translates into a sustained return to normalcy. The decision signals a potential pivot in IPOB’s strategy under Kanu’s guidance, moving away from a widely condemned enforcement model. Its success will depend on grassroots compliance and the group’s ability to enforce its own new order, with significant implications for the South-East’s economic recovery and daily social order.
