The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, from its list of elected members. Earlier, INEC had declared Doguwa, a member of the All Progressives Congress, the winner of the February 25 election in the Doguwa/Tudunwada constituency, where he received 39,732 votes, defeating New Nigeria People’s Party candidate Yushau Salisu Abdullahi, who garnered 34,798 votes.
Doguwa was subsequently arrested for alleged involvement in the killing of several persons and the burning of the New Nigeria People’s Party Secretariat during the recent general election. On Wednesday, a chief magistrate’s court in Kano remanded him to prison custody. A review of INEC’s list of elected members shows that Doguwa’s name has been removed, with the commission noting that the original election result was “a declaration made under duress.” Further details will follow.
