Nigeria’s Justice Minister Calls for Systemic Reforms to Boost Public Trust
ABUJA — Nigeria’s Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has urged stakeholders across the justice sector to adopt accountable and transformative solutions to overcome systemic inefficiencies and improve service delivery for citizens.
Speaking at a strategic retreat for the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, themed “Streamlining the Ministry 2026 Performance Management Cycle in Alignment with Presidential Priorities and Sector-Specific Deliverables,” Mr. Fagbemi stressed the urgent need to recalibrate the nation’s justice machinery. He argued that persistent challenges, including weak institutional structures, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and poor inter-agency coordination, have eroded public confidence in the justice system.
“All hands must be on deck to confront uncomfortable truths,” the Minister stated. He linked these operational shortcomings directly to the administration’s broader priorities of good governance, economic transformation, and strengthening the rule of law. The retreat, he described, is a “strategic convergence of minds united by a singular purpose” to achieve service excellence.
Mr. Fagbemi reminded sector leaders of the “sacred trust” placed in them, emphasizing that Nigerians deserve a justice system that is efficient, fair, and operates with integrity. His call for reform targets a system often criticized for delays, opacity, and limited accessibility.
Supporting the Minister’s vision, the Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Beatrice Jedi-Agba, commended the Ministry’s meticulous preparation for the retreat. She highlighted the goal of developing a practical roadmap with measurable steps toward a more efficient justice administration system.
“The decisions and commitments we make here will define the experience of millions in Nigeria and beyond,” said the Solicitor General. She urged participants to remain fully committed to delivering the “transformative results our nation deserves.”
The retreat represents a key step in aligning the justice ministry’s operational plans with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s deliverables. For Nigeria’s overburdened court systems and legions of citizens awaiting justice, the outcomes of this internal strategic review could signal a shift toward more responsive and reliable public service.
