UEFA announced on Tuesday that it will refund all tickets purchased by Liverpool fans for the 2022 Champions League final. A review uncovered a series of organisational failures that “almost led to a disaster” outside the Stade de France. The refund scheme covers the entire Liverpool allocation—19,618 tickets—so supporters will receive the full price they paid, ranging from £59.40 to £585.70 for seats at the incident‑hit final in Paris last May.
Liverpool were involved in the process that led to this decision, influencing discussions from the outset. The refund follows the indiscriminate use of tear gas on their fans, which caused crushes around the stadium before the match. Initially, UEFA and the French government blamed Liverpool supporters for the disturbances, but both later retracted those claims. A UEFA‑commissioned report subsequently praised the fans’ conduct and highlighted that the organisational failures of the two governing bodies could have had catastrophic consequences.
