APC Firmly Rejects Implosion Claims Before National Convention

APC Dismisses Claims of Implosion Ahead of National Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected predictions that it will fracture before its forthcoming national convention, calling such assertions politically motivated and divorced from reality. The ruling party said the narrative is being promoted by a weakened opposition seeking to project its own internal crises onto a cohesive APC.

In a statement on Sunday, Lagos State APC spokesman Seye Oladejo asserted that the party remains united and focused on the future. He described forecasts of an implosion as “wishful thinking by a fragmented opposition.”

The statement counters a common narrative in Nigerian political discourse, where some analysts and rival parties have speculated about potential divisions within the APC as it prepares for a major leadership exercise. Oladejo framed the convention, instead, as a historic platform for “renewal, reconciliation and consolidation,” citing past events that strengthened party structures and enhanced internal democracy.

He contrasted the APC’s approach with what he described as the opposition’s disarray. “While the APC is consolidating structures, opposition parties remain weakened by leadership disputes and persistent defections,” Oladejo said, adding that critics are “trapped in reactive politics and public recriminations” rather than policy debate.

The spokesman also addressed a separate issue, expressing concern over alleged remarks by a former state governor claiming to have tapped the phone of the National Security Adviser. He stated that if true, such an action raises serious legal and national security questions, underscoring the need for a credible opposition that engages constructively.

Oladejo outlined the APC’s strategic posture as it prepares for the convention and subsequent electoral cycles. “As others speculate about crisis, we consolidate. As others amplify rhetoric, we deepen structure. As others predict implosion, we prepare for expansion,” he stated, concluding there is “only renewed momentum, unity of purpose and strategic alignment.”

The APC’s response aims to project stability and organizational strength as Nigeria’s ruling party since 2015 gears up for a critical political transition. The party’s ability to present a united front at its convention will be closely watched for signals about its cohesion heading into future elections, while the opposition’s continued fragmentation may impact the overall political contest. The outcome of the convention will set the stage for the APC’s strategy in the next electoral cycle.
