Adamawa’s Binos Yaroe Quits PDP Over Self-Destruction

Senator Binos Yaroe, who represents Adamawa South Senatorial District in Nigeria’s National Assembly, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s irreversible drift toward self-destruction at the national level. His announcement, made in a statement to journalists, underscores rising internal tensions within one of Africa’s largest political parties.

Yaroe, an incumbent senator, voiced regret over his decision after years of membership. “After many years of fruitful journey as a committed member of the PDP, it pains me that the party has elected to self-destruct at the national level,” he stated. He added that the party’s current condition offered him no alternative but to withdraw his membership.

The senator confirmed he had formally notified the PDP by submitting his resignation letter to his ward chairman in Mbilla Ward, Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area. This procedural step follows typical practices for party defections in Nigeria, where local officials are often the initial point of contact.

This defection is the second major exit from the PDP in Adamawa State within a month, following former Minister of State for Health, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong. The consecutive departures highlight growing dissatisfaction with the PDP’s leadership and strategy in the region.

The PDP, founded in 1998, governed Nigeria for 16 years until 2015 but has since grappled with factionalism and electoral losses. Defections are common in Nigerian politics, frequently intensifying ahead of election cycles as politicians realign with perceived advantageous parties. Adamawa State, located in the northeast, holds significant political weight due to its large electorate and historical influence in national contests.

Yaroe’s move arrives amid broader political realignments. While he did not disclose his next affiliation, such exits often precede joins with rival parties, like the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), or new alliances. However, only his PDP resignation is confirmed by available information.

The significance of this defection centers on timing and location. Adamawa is a key battleground for PDP influence, and losing a sitting senator may erode the party’s organizational capacity in the state. For the PDP, repeated defections signal unresolved internal conflicts that could undermine its efforts to rebuild as a cohesive opposition force.

As Nigeria’s political landscape shifts, Yaroe’s resignation highlights the volatility of party loyalty and the challenges facing the PDP. The party has not yet publicly responded. Observers will monitor any further defections from Adamawa and the senator’s subsequent actions, as these developments may reshape alliances ahead of future electoral cycles. This incident reinforces a trend of fragmentation within the PDP, potentially impacting its national strategy and regional strength.
