Benue cooperation with justice on Yelewata forensic probe

The Benue State Government has pledged full cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Justice as a forensic team begins work in the state, following the June 13, 2025, violent incident in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area. This deployment is a critical step in the federal prosecution of nine individuals charged in connection with the attack.

Governor Hyacinth Alia formally welcomed the forensic pathologists, emphasizing the state’s commitment to the investigation. The team’s seven-day assignment involves gathering scientific and medical evidence from theattack site to support the ongoing legal process. The governor was represented by the Director-General of Homeland Security, Air Commodore Jacob Gbamwuan (rtd), and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yangien Ornguga, who assured the specialists of complete logistical support from state authorities.

The forensic mission follows the Federal Government’s February 2, 2026, arraignment of nine suspects before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court has underscored that scientific, verifiable evidence is essential to ensure a fair and transparent trial. This focus on forensic methodology reflects a broader judicial shift toward evidence-based prosecution in high-profile cases, particularly those involving complex communal violence.

State officials confirmed the forensic exercise is integral to a wider strategy to conclusively identify all perpetrators and deliver justice for the victims of the Yelewata attack. While the identities of the accused have not been officially released, the charges signal a decisive federal response to the incident.

Governor Alia concurrently appealed to residents for calm during the sensitive investigation phase. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability, regardless of the perpetrators’ affiliations. This stance aims to prevent further escalation and build public confidence in the state’s collaboration with federal justice mechanisms.

The Yelewata incident is part of a recurring pattern of communal and herder-farmer clashes in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, where disputes over land and resources often turn deadly. The decision to deploy federal forensic resources highlights the case’s national importance and the government’s stated objective to break cycles of impunity through rigorous legal procedures. The outcome of this forensic inquiry and the subsequent trial will be closely watched as a benchmark for the authorities’ capacity to investigate and prosecute large-scale violence impartially. The next procedural milestone is the submission of the forensic report to the Federal High Court, which will shape the prosecution’s case moving forward.
