The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has reaffirmed its commitment to a zoning arrangement for allocating elective party positions, following the adoption of recommendations from an ad hoc committee. This decision aims to ensure a consensus-driven distribution of roles across the state’s 33 local government areas as the party prepares for its state congress and future elections.
The party’s state secretariat confirmed that stakeholders officially endorsed the zoning framework during a meeting held on Sunday. The process is guided by directives from the national APC leadership, which instructed the continuation of the consensus method previously used for ward and local government congresses. This approach will now govern the upcoming State Congress.
The Ad Hoc Zoning Committee, chaired by Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle with Mr. Afeez Bolaji Repete as Secretary, has begun its work. The committee will shortly inform each local government chapter of the specific position allocated to its representative on the State Executive Committee. Following this notification, stakeholders in all 33 local government areas are expected to convene and nominate candidates. These nominees will then undergo mandatory screening by a special vetting team from the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
A statement issued by the state Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, urged party leaders to prioritize quality in their selections. “We urge leaders across all local government areas to ensure that only the best candidates are considered for nomination, as the strength of our Party depends on the quality of its leadership,” the statement read. It expressed confidence that both the nomination and screening exercises would conclude on schedule.
The new State Executive Committee is slated for unveiling and inauguration this Tuesday at the main bowl of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan. The party called on all members and stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the congresses yield peaceful and widely accepted outcomes, reinforcing unity ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.
The reaffirmation of zoning underscores the APC’s effort to manage internal equity and prevent conflicts over representation in a politically diverse state like Oyo. By institutionalising this allocation mechanism, the party seeks to present a united front and streamline its organisational结构 ahead of crucial electoral contests.
