Crufts Birmingham Show Features 20,000 Dogs, Record Overseas

More than 20,000 dogs and their handlers have converged on Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre for the opening of Crufts, the United Kingdom’s largest and most prestigious annual dog show. The four-day event, organised by The Kennel Club, features breed competitions, judging, and training demonstrations, drawing participants from across the globe.

A record number of overseas entries highlights the competition’s international stature. Over 4,000 dogs have travelled from abroad, with significant contingents from France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. For many competitors, simply qualifying for Crufts represents a major accomplishment in a year of dedicated preparation. Dogs are presented on the event’s iconic green carpets as judges evaluate them against precise breed standards, assessing posture, movement, and conformation.

Since its inception in 1891, Crufts has evolved into a cornerstone event for the global dog-loving community. Beyond the competitive rings, the show serves as a major gathering where hundreds of breeds are showcased and visitors can learn about canine health, training, and welfare. The culmination of the competition occurs on Sunday evening with the selection of Best in Show, the most coveted title awarded to one dog from among the individual breed winners.

The event underscores the deep cultural significance of pedigreed dog shows in the UK and their growing international appeal. It functions as both a competitive pinnacle for breeders and a public celebration of the diversity of purebred dogs. The high volume of entries, particularly from overseas, reflects Crufts’ enduring role as a world championship for the sport of dogs, setting benchmarks for breed standards that influence enthusiasts worldwide. The show continues through the weekend, with the final Best in Show announcement marking the climax of this year’s competition.
