Despite missing out on the FIBA World Cup, Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, the D’Tigers, retained their position as the top team on the continent and ranked 19th in the world in the latest FIBA World rankings, according to reports.

In the recent African qualifiers window in Luanda, the D’Tigers won two games, defeating Guinea and Ivory Coast, before losing the final match to Angola. That loss cost them the qualifying spot, which went to Cape Verde.

The latest rankings published on the FIBA website show Nigeria as the highest‑rated basketball nation in Africa and 19th globally with 461.4 points. Tunisia follows in second place on the continent and 21st in the world with 448.6 points. Senegal ranks third in Africa and 37th worldwide, while Angola is fourth in Africa and 41st globally. Ivory Coast, which also qualified for the World Cup, occupies the fifth spot in Africa and 42nd in the world.

At the global level, Spain is rated the best basketball nation with 758 points, ahead of the United States in second place. Australia, Argentina and France round out the top five worldwide.
