Zamfara Lawal APC Defection Key to Peace, End Banditry

The defection of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been welcomed as a potential catalyst for political reconciliation and improved security coordination in the north-western state. Former lawmaker Shehu Sani said the move should mark a new chapter of peace among political elites, ending years of rivalry that have hampered efforts to combat banditry.

Governor Lawal, who was elected in 2023 under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced his switch to the APC on Tuesday following extensive consultations with political stakeholders in the state. His departure reduces the PDP’s presence in the region and consolidates the APC’s control in Zamfara.

Sani, a former senator, linked the state’s persistent security crisis directly to political divisions. “The years of bitter political rivalries and hostilities have seriously undermined efforts to tackle the security challenges in the state,” he stated. He argued that coordinated action against armed criminal groups, known locally as bandits, has been fractured by elite competition. Zamfara is widely considered the epicentre of banditry in the North-West, a crisis characterised by mass kidnappings, village raids, and extensive cattle rustling that has displaced thousands and crippled local economies.

Historically, Zamfara’s politics has been fiercely contested, with the PDP and APC often locked in antagonistic relationships that spilled over into security management. Sani expressed optimism that the governor’s defection could unify political actors, stating, “I’m glad to see that all hands will now be on deck to confront the problem.” He emphasised that a unified front among state and local government leaders is essential for any effective security strategy.

The governor’s move is the latest in a series of high-profile political realignments in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election cycle, where party affiliations often shift in response to shifting alliances and calculations. For Zamfara, the immediate significance lies in the possibility of ending the political friction that, according to analysts, has sometimes led to a lack of cooperation between state government agencies and federal security forces.

The success of this new political alignment will be measured by its tangible impact on security. Observers note that sustained banditry requires not only military action but also political consensus on resource allocation, community policing initiatives, and reintegration programs. The coming months will indicate whether Governor Lawal’s defection translates into the cohesive governance Sani has envisioned, or if underlying rivalries persist.
