Nigeria Establishes Committee to Overhaul Taxation Curriculum for Universities
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), through its NRS Academy, has inaugurated a Curriculum Review Committee aimed at modernizing taxation education across Nigerian tertiary institutions. The move is part of a broader strategy to develop a more robust and responsive tax administration system that aligns with global best practices.
Inaugurated on February 24, 2026, at the NRS Academy in Durumi, Abuja, the committee operates under the leadership of the Director of the NRS Academy, Mr. Adeolu Akinyemi. He emphasized the initiative’s goal to collaborate with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in developing a structured curriculum that ensures academic training directly reflects the operational realities of contemporary tax administration.
The committee’s primary mandate is to review existing taxation curricula in Nigerian universities and propose updates that integrate current tax policies, recent legislative amendments, and emerging fields such as digital taxation and international tax frameworks. By bridging the gap between theoretical instruction and practical application, the effort seeks to equip graduates with the competencies needed to support an efficient tax ecosystem.
Membership of the committee includes tax experts from academia, seasoned professionals in tax policy and administration, and representatives from the NRS. It is chaired by the Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of the NRS on Research and Statistics. The committee will also engage with national education regulatory bodies and professional institutions to ensure the revised curriculum meets both academic standards and the practical demands of Nigeria’s tax sector.
This initiative responds to ongoing efforts to enhance tax knowledge, promote voluntary compliance, and cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving national revenue growth. Analysts note that improving tax education is critical for Nigeria, where tax-to-GDP ratio remains below regional averages, and a modernized administration is key to economic diversification.
The review is scheduled for completion within 60 days. Upon conclusion, the NRS Academy will provide updates on the adoption and implementation of the revised curriculum, marking a significant step in aligning Nigeria’s tax education with international standards and domestic fiscal objectives.
