Trump Warns Iran of Military Strike if Mines Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that any mining of the Strait of Hormuz would trigger unprecedented military consequences. The warning follows reports that Iran has begun laying mines in the critical waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world’s seaborne oil passes.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he had not yet received reports of mines being placed but declared that if any were discovered, they must be removed “IMMEDIATELY!” He stated that failure to do so would result in military action against Iran “at a level never seen before.” Conversely, he added that the removal of any such devices would be “a giant step in the right direction.”

The President also specified that the US military would use missiles previously deployed against drug-trafficking vessels to “permanently eliminate” any Iranian boat involved in mining operations. “They will be dealt with quickly and violently,” he wrote, concluding with “BEWARE!”

The warning came after CNN, citing anonymous sources familiar with US intelligence, reported that Iran had indeed commenced minelaying operations in the Strait of Hormuz. The report noted that shipping traffic through the strait has virtually halted amid heightened tensions.

Separately, the White House clarified on Tuesday that the United States has not escorted any oil tankers through the strait. This statement addressed and contradicted a now-deleted claim posted on the social media account of the US Secretary of Energy.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for global energy markets. Iran’s previous threats to close it have been a recurring source of tension with the United States, often linked to broader disputes over its nuclear program and regional activities. Trump’s direct and public threat marks a significant escalation in rhetoric, framing any mining attempt as a red line with severe, defined consequences.

The situation underscores the persistent volatility in the Gulf region and its direct potential impact on global oil supply chains and prices. The international community remains watchful for any developments that could disrupt the critical passage.
