Senator Akobundu Resigns from PDP Over Party Crises

Senator Akobundu Resigns from Nigeria’s PDP, Citing Party Crises

Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents the Abia Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of Nigeria’s major political parties. In his formal notice, the senator attributed his decision to prolonged and unresolved internal crises within the party.

The resignation was communicated via a letter dated and titled “NOTICE OF FORMAL RESIGNATION,” which Senator Akobundu submitted to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko. The letter states that his departure from the party is effective immediately.

In his statement, Senator Akobundu expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded to him during his tenure with the PDP, describing his period of membership as one of mutually beneficial service to both the party and the nation. However, he emphasized that the fundamental reason for his exit is the persistent turmoil that has plagued the party.

“At this time of our nation’s political evolution, the sad and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the Party for so long, and after wide consultations with my associates and supporters, it has become pertinent that I take the very painful but necessary decision to resign my membership of the party,” the senator wrote.

The PDP, which governed Nigeria for 16 years until 2015, has faced significant internal factionalism and leadership disputes in recent years, weakening its cohesion as the main opposition party. Senator Akobundu’s resignation adds to the string of defections that have impacted the party’s legislative strength and organizational stability ahead of future elections.

While stepping down, Senator Akobundu extended his best wishes to the PDP for its future endeavors. He framed his decision as a matter of principle and careful reflection, suggesting his political path will continue independently or with another platform. His departure creates a vacancy in the Abia Central senatorial seat’s party affiliation and may influence the dynamic within the district and the broader PDP structure in Abia State.

The move underscores the ongoing fluidity in Nigeria’s political landscape, where longstanding party affiliations are being reassessed amid national challenges. Senator Akobundu has not specified his next political move, leaving his constituents and political observers to anticipate his future alignment as the country prepares for the next electoral cycle.
