The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to maintain optimism as it undertakes efforts to strengthen its position as the primary opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This statement follows an Expanded Emergency Meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) held on Wednesday.
A central issue addressed in the meeting’s communiqué is the party’s formal disagreement with a recent Court of Appeal judgment. The court ruled to invalidate the PDP’s National Convention, held from November 15 to 16, 2025, which had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC). The PDP stated it is currently seeking legal counsel on its next course of action regarding this decision.
The party also expressed serious concern over persistent internal leadership disputes, describing them as avoidable and damaging. These conflicts have resulted in costly litigation that undermines the party’s unity and operational efficiency. The PDP emphasized that such internal wrangling is detrimental to its effectiveness as the nation’s major opposition party.
In response, the PDP called on its members and the public to avoid dispiritement. The communiqué reaffirmed the party’s commitment to repositioning itself for the “task of salvaging our nation from the stranglehold of the APC.” This framing positions the PDP as a necessary corrective force to the current government.
The BoT meeting underscores the PDP’s struggle to resolve its internal governance crisis while attempting to mount a credible challenge to the APC. The invalidation of its recent national convention by the courts creates a significant leadership vacuum and legal uncertainty. How the PDP navigates this legal hurdle and mends internal divisions will directly impact its capacity to serve as a unified opposition. The party’s appeal for public hope is thus intrinsically linked to its ability to achieve internal cohesion and present a viable alternative agenda to Nigerian voters.
