Omah Lay 2-Month Breakup at Grammys Inspired Don’t Love Me

Nigerian singer Omah Lay has disclosed that a brief romantic relationship ended abruptly while he was attending the 2025 Grammy Awards earlier this year, a personal crisis he says overshadowed the high-profile event.

Speaking at the listening session for his forthcoming album, Clarity Of Mind, Lay revealed the relationship lasted approximately two months. He expressed that he initially perceived it as a serious partnership, even contemplating starting a family with the woman. The breakup occurred during his time in Los Angeles for the Grammy ceremony in early February.

“Every time I fall in love, I lose myself,” Lay told the audience. “While I was at the Grammy and Justin Bieber was performing, I was having a breakup and an embarrassing moment. I was not present because even before the show I had already started having issues in my relationship. And this was only a two-month-old relationship. But I thought it was the right relationship and I was going to have a baby.”

The artist attributed the turmoil to his difficulty in balancing personal life with his professional commitments, stating he struggles to multitask. “I don’t know how to do two things at a time. When I am into one thing, all of me is into that,” he explained. “So, I wasn’t even present at the Grammys. I didn’t even enjoy anything.”

This intense personal experience directly inspired his track “Don’t Love Me.” Lay clarified the song’s meaning: “It’s me saying girl, let’s enjoy this moment but as soon as I find another thing that gives me pleasure, I’m going to leave.” He framed the lyric as an honest reflection of his tendency to become wholly consumed by a single pursuit, whether a relationship or his music.

The revelations provide context for themes explored on his upcoming project, Clarity Of Mind. The album is positioned as a window into his recent emotional state, with the Grammy breakup serving as a pivotal moment that informed its creation. Lay’s account underscores the challenges artists may face in maintaining personal connections amid global fame and demanding creative schedules. The discussion sets an expectant tone for the album’s release, suggesting listeners can anticipate a raw and introspective body of work shaped by this period of personal upheaval.
