The Appeal Court in Abuja has granted President‑elect Bola Tinubu access to inspect electoral materials used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the February 25, 2022 general elections. Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, urged the Court of Appeal on Tuesday to order INEC to provide him with these sensitive materials.
Through his lawyer, Mr. Akintola Makinde, Tinubu explained that he needs to inspect, scan and photocopy certain electoral documents to prepare his defence against petitions seeking to nullify his election. In his first ex‑parte application filed on March 6, the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, were named as respondents. In a second application, the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, were added alongside INEC.
Makinde stated that the materials will be crucial for preparing the defence and for comparing the information with data stored on INEC’s back‑end server. On Wednesday, a three‑member panel of the court delivered its judgment, granting the reliefs sought by Tinubu and the APC in the fourth ex‑parte motion, except for prayers 5 and 6 in the motion filed by Tinubu. Details to follow.
