President Bola Tinubu has approved the acquisition of new military equipment to bolster the Nigerian Armed Forces’ campaign against insurgency and terrorism, Defence Minister Christopher Musa announced Thursday.
The announcement followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja where Minister Musa led the nation’s service chiefs to brief the president on the current security landscape and ongoing military operations across the country.
According to Mr. Musa, the presentation provided President Tinubu with a detailed, ground-level perspective that he said often differs from media reports. While acknowledging recent violent incidents, the minister stated that security forces have maintained decisive operations, inflicting heavy casualties on terrorist groups. He confirmed that several key militant commanders were neutralised in recent engagements and that troops recovered significant quantities of enemy matériel.
The minister also acknowledged the recent loss of service personnel, describing their deaths as “highly regrettable.” He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens and appealed for public patience and support. Mr Musa noted a historical pattern where terrorist groups frequently escalate attacks during the Ramadan period, a trend he said military commanders are actively countering through adjusted operational strategies.
