Kebbi Government denies viral Ramadan palliative maize claim

The Kebbi State Government has dismissed as misleading a viral social media video in which a school teacher, Abduljalal Usman, complained about the quantity of Ramadan palliatives received in Dandi Local Government Area.

In the circulating clip, Usman, reportedly a staff member of the Dandi Local Government Education Authority, claimed he was allocated only one mudu (a local measurement bowl) of rice and one mudu of maize. His statement ignited public debate over the distribution of government-provided food aid during the holy month.

Responding in an official statement, the state government, through Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy Abdullahi Idris, presented a contradictory account. The adviser stated that the grains distributed under the state’s palliative programme were rice and millet, not maize as alleged in the video. Furthermore, he asserted that the palliative allocation designated for Dandi Local Government had not yet arrived at the council headquarters at the time the video was recorded, making the claims about its contents and quantity impossible.

The government’s statement also alleged that the individual in the video was being used for political gain, claiming that Usman is a psychiatric patient. This characterization suggests the complaint was not an authentic grievance but part of a calculated effort to discredit the state administration.

In a related development, the Dandi Local Government Education Authority has temporarily lifted Usman’s suspension. This action is pending the outcome of a full investigation into the incident and the authenticity of the viral video.

The incident highlights the intense scrutiny surrounding government palliative distribution in Nigeria, particularly during periods of economic hardship and religious observance like Ramadan. Such programmes are often subject to public vigilance, with viral videos frequently becoming catalysts for debate on equity and transparency. The state government’s swift rebuttal, including questioning the complainant’s mental health and the timing of the allocation, underscores the high political stakes attached to the management and perception of these aid efforts. The pending investigation is expected to clarify the sequence of events and determine the validity of the conflicting narratives presented by the teacher and the state authorities.
