Lafia Road Abandoned 8 Years, Healthcare Access at Risk

Residents of Lafia in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, describe growing frustration as the Lafia-Agyaragu Tofa road project remains unfinished eight years after its 2017 award by the state government. The six-kilometre highway, valued at approximately ₦865 million, was slated to improve connectivity between Lafia and the surrounding communities of Agyaragu and Tofa, but prolonged delays have left the route in a severely deteriorated state.

The state government announced the contract approval in 2017, a development initially welcomed by locals who anticipated easier travel and better access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. Instead, the road has worsened over time, with deep potholes and sections that become nearly impassable during the rainy season. In a direct response to the abandonment, some residents have taken to filling dangerous potholes with bags of sand, a temporary measure that underscores the project’s stalled progress.

The deteriorated infrastructure has intensified transportation challenges for daily commuters, traders, and students. More critically, residents note that the poor condition frequently delays emergency trips to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital, a key medical facility serving the region. These delays raise concerns about timely access to critical healthcare, highlighting the road’s vital role in public safety and well-being.

The Lafia-Agyaragu Tofa road serves as a crucial economic and social link for multiple communities in central Nasarawa. Its intended completion was part of broader state infrastructure efforts to foster regional development and improve rural connectivity. The project’s persistent incompletion, despite its clear valuation and announced start, points to significant bottlenecks in execution that have real-world consequences for local livelihoods and health outcomes.

With no clear timeline for resumption or completion, the situation reflects a wider pattern of infrastructure project delays in parts of Nigeria, where awarded contracts sometimes face hurdles related to funding, contractor performance, or administrative oversight. For the residents of Lafia, the unfinished road represents both a tangible obstruction to daily life and a symbol of unmet governmental promises. The ongoing struggle to navigate the degraded route continues to exact a heavy toll on economic activity, education, and emergency medical access in the area.
