Multiple explosions struck locations across Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno State, on Monday evening, causing widespread panic in the city frequently targeted by insurgents. According to local reports, the blasts, believed to be from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), occurred near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) entrance, the Monday Market Roundabout, and the Elkanemi Warriors Stadium area.
Witnesses reported the first detonation occurred around 7 p.m., shortly after the evening fast-breaking meal during Ramadan. As of publication, there has been no official confirmation of casualties from the explosions, with emergency services and security forces securing the scenes.
The incidents happened just hours after a reported attack on a military outpost in the Ajilari area on the city’s outskirts. Security sources stated that suspected insurgents assaulted the position, setting parts of it ablaze and seizing a military patrol vehicle. The sources added that troops successfully repelled the assault, inflicting casualties on the attackers, some of whom fled with gunshot wounds.
Maiduguri, a historical center in northeast Nigeria, has been a recurrent epicenter of the long-running conflict with the Boko Haram extremist group and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). While military operations have reduced the group’s territorial control, asymmetrical attacks using IEDs and ambushes remain a persistent threat.
The consecutive events underscore the volatile security environment in the region. Investigations into the explosions and the earlier military engagement are ongoing. Authorities are expected to issue formal statements as more details become available.
