Neymar Left Out of Brazil Squad as Ancelotti Cites Fitness

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that forward Neymar is not yet fit for international selection, explaining his omission from the squad announced for upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia.

Ancelotti released his 23-man roster on Monday for the European away games scheduled later this month. In addressing the absence of the veteran attacker, the coach stated that Neymar’s current physical condition was the determining factor. “Neymar is not at 100%,” Ancelotti said, as reported by ESPN. “If he can be at 100% physically, he can be there. Neymar could be at the World Cup. He has to keep working, playing, showcasing his qualities and maintaining good physical condition.”

The decision underscores the Italy-born manager’s focus on current fitness over reputation. Neymar, 32, has not represented Brazil since October 2023, a period marked by transition for both the player and the national team. His last appearance coincided with the initial stages of his move from Paris Saint-Germain to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, a transfer that was followed by a significant period of injury rehabilitation and gradual reintegration into club football.

Ancelotti, who assumed the Brazil role in 2023, is in the early phases of defining his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and the tournament itself. The friendlies against France (on June 5) and Croatia (June 8) form part of this preparatory window, offering an opportunity to assess players in high-level competition. The current selection highlights a team in flux, with several regulars from previous cycles absent or phased out as Ancelotti implements his project.

Neymar’s pathway back to the national team is now clearly defined by his manager: consistent performance and optimal fitness at club level. While his talent remains undisputed, the coach’s public comments frame his return as contingent on demonstrable physical readiness rather than solely on historical contribution. This pragmatic approach signals that selection for Brazil’s future, including the 2026 World Cup, will be earned through sustained availability and form.

The situation places the onus on Neymar to prove his durability with Al Hilal. His ability to navigate a full season without recurring injury will be closely monitored by Ancelotti’s staff. Brazil’s next set of fixtures after the European friendlies will likely provide the next benchmark for his potential reintegration, as the team continues its build-up toward World Cup qualification matches resuming later this year.
