Fiscal Reforms, Economic Management: Oyedele Pledges Support

Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, has pledged dedicated support for the federal government’s fiscal reforms and economic management agenda following his swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Oyedele took the oath of office before President Bola Tinubu on Monday, describing the appointment as a privilege during a critical phase of Nigeria’s economic development. He thanked the President for the confidence placed in him and acknowledged Nigerians and stakeholders who backed previous tax reform initiatives he was involved with.

The minister stressed that the value of any reform lies in its execution. “Reforms are only as good as the paper on which they are written. What is really important is the diligent execution, moving from policy formulation to implementation,” he stated. Oyedele assured that he would commit his utmost effort to the role. “One thing I can promise the President and the Nigerian people is that I will give my very best at every point in time,” he added.

He identified key priorities aligned with the government’s broader economic strategy. Central to these is revenue mobilisation to address growing public expenditure demands at federal and state levels. Oyedele also highlighted the necessity of improving spending efficiency to maximise the value of every naira earned. Furthermore, he underscored debt management and achieving fiscal sustainability as essential components of the administration’s plan to navigate economic challenges.

Oyedele expressed confidence that with the support of the Ministry of Finance’s leadership and professional team, the government could overcome existing hurdles.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, who attended the ceremony alongside Oyedele, commended the President for the appointment. He described Oyedele as a top professional with extensive experience in fiscal and tax reforms, stating that the choice demonstrated President Tinubu’s commitment to competence and effective economic management. Governor Aiyedatiwa also expressed appreciation for the representation of Ondo State in the Federal Executive Council.

The swearing-in marks the latest step in the administration’s push to implement rigorous economic reforms aimed at stabilising public finances, enhancing revenue generation, and ensuring long-term fiscal health amid significant economic pressures. Oyedele’s immediate focus will be on translating policy directives into actionable outcomes within the finance ministry.
