Bandits were reported to have killed six vigilante members at the Awaro checkpoint in the western part of Birnin‑Gwari, Birnin‑Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
A vigilante, Usman Babangida, who was mourning the loss of his colleagues, told reporters that the bandits attacked the checkpoint in large numbers. He said the hoodlums opened fire sporadically upon sighting the vigilantes, killing no fewer than six of them. The deceased were buried according to Muslim rites.
Babangida added that the attack happened as the bandits clashed with other armed groups in the nearby community of Bugai. He could not confirm the casualty figures from that clash at the time of the report. “The incident happened around 4:00 p.m. when the bandits were passing through the Awaro checkpoint and attacked the local vigilantes on sighting them. They killed all six vigilante members on the spot, until some villagers discovered their bodies and later conveyed them to the town,” he said.
There has been no official reaction from the state government or the police. A call to Police Public Relations Officer Muhammad Jalige found his line busy, and a text message sent by our correspondent received no response.
