Peller Sued for Verbal Assault, Invasion of Privacy

Popular Nigerian social media personality Peller is facing legal action over an alleged verbal assault and invasion of privacy following a confrontation at a Lagos lounge. The lawsuit, initiated by Osarobo Odigie, underscores the legal risks associated with sharing confrontational content online.

The incident occurred on January 6, 2024, at Folixxx Lounge on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. According to Odigie’s legal representatives, the confrontation took place while she was purchasing food. Peller, who has a significant following on TikTok, subsequently recorded and shared a video of the verbal altercation on his social media platforms in early January. He later publicly apologized for publishing the video without Odigie’s consent.

In a formal pre-action letter dated recently, Odigie, through her legal counsel at FA Garrick & Co., detailed her allegations. The letter accuses Peller of subjecting her to verbal abuse during the encounter and of compounding the harm by disseminating the video online. Odigie is demanding N395 million in compensation. The claim cites multiple grounds, including defamation from the video’s publication, intentional infliction of emotional distress, reputational damage, and additional suffering resulting from subsequent cyberbullying.

The legal notice stipulates that if these specific demands are not met, formal court proceedings will commence next week. This move follows Peller’s earlier apology, which Odigie’s legal team asserts does not absolve the liability for the initial assault and the ongoing impact of the widely shared footage.

This case highlights the growing legal scrutiny over social media conduct in Nigeria, particularly regarding privacy rights and the dissemination of personal confrontations. It serves as a notable precedent for online creators regarding the boundaries of consent and the potential civil repercussions of sharing unauthorized content. The outcome may influence how digital influencers navigate personal interactions and public disclosures. The filing of formal lawsuits next week will determine whether the matter proceeds to court for adjudication on the merits of the allegations.
