The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that one of its staff members is under investigation in connection with the death of corps member Miss Victoria Ariyo in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State. The development follows a statement by the scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, describing the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing.
According to the statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, the NYSC management is cooperating fully with security agencies to establish the full circumstances surrounding the corps member’s death. Preliminary reports indicate that the staff member allegedly linked to the incident has been taken into custody, with investigations by relevant authorities progressing steadily without external interference.
The NYSC extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for strength during this difficult period and for the peaceful repose of her soul. The scheme reiterated its strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct or abuse of office.
“We assure the public that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure the truth is established and that justice is served without fear or favour at all times,” the statement read.
The NYSC urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow due process to take its course. It reaffirmed that the welfare, safety, and dignity of all corps members remain a top priority across the country.
Established in 1973, the NYSC is a mandatory one-year service program for Nigerian graduates, aimed at fostering national unity and development by deploying young Nigerians to states other than their own. Corps members, often called “alumni” during their service year, are typically assigned to schools, health centers, and government offices. The death of a corps member under such circumstances raises serious questions about the safety protocols and oversight within the scheme, particularly in host communities.
The ongoing investigation will likely focus on the exact sequence of events leading to Ms. Ariyo’s death and the specific involvement of the detained staff member. Security agencies are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry, with findings to be made public in due course.
The NYSC’s prompt acknowledgment and pledge of cooperation signal an effort to maintain transparency amidst public concern. The organization’s commitment to a transparent judicial process and the protection of corps members will be closely monitored as the case unfolds.
