Kabir Makko Resigns from NNPP and as Gombe State Chairman

Kabir Makko, the Gombe State chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has resigned from both his party membership and his leadership position. The departure, formalized in a letter dated March 23, 2026, marks a significant shift in the party’s structure ahead of future electoral cycles.

In the correspondence addressed to the NNPP Akko Ward chairman, Makko stated his decision followed “careful political consideration.” He explicitly relinquished his role as the Gombe State Party Chairman, a post he held while also serving as a registered party member. “By this resignation, I also relinquish my position as the Gombe State Party Chairman,” Makko wrote, confirming the dual nature of his exit from the party’s ranks.

The resignation letter, copies of which were dispatched to the NNPP National Chairman, included expressions of gratitude to party members and stakeholders for their support during his tenure. No specific reason for the “political consideration” was detailed in the available correspondence.

The NNPP, a significant opposition party in Nigeria, saw increased national visibility following the 2023 general elections, where it emerged as a key challenger in several northern states. Gombe State, located in the northeast, has been an area of strategic importance for the party’s regional ambitions. Makko’s resignation as the top state official creates an immediate leadership vacuum in the chapter and prompts questions about the party’s preparatory strategy for subsequent state and national contests.

The development underscores ongoing internal dynamics within the NNPP as it consolidates its opposition role. The national leadership is now expected to initiate the process of appointing an interim or substantive replacement for the Gombe State chairmanship, a critical step in maintaining organizational coherence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
