PDP’s Da-Silva to Join APC for Globally Competitive Lagos

Ayodeji Da-Silva, a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has announced his intention to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alignment with progressive and people-centred policies as his primary motivation. Da-Silva, a healthcare professional with over two decades in the PDP, believes the APC provides a more viable platform for implementing forward-looking initiatives to drive national and state growth.

A native of Lagos Island, Da-Silva emphasized his desire to contribute more effectively to the development of Lagos State, envisioning it as a globally competitive city comparable to New York. His background blends academic and professional expertise; he holds qualifications in industrial chemistry and healthcare administration and previously served as a Regional Director for a Health Maintenance Organization in Detroit, Michigan, USA, gaining international exposure. His political journey began in student leadership, and he has contested elective offices, including the Lagos West Senatorial seat and the presidency.

Da-Silva stated that his entry into politics was inspired by a passion to improve Nigerian welfare, particularly through healthcare sector reforms. He underscored that political leadership is a vital instrument for achieving lasting change and sustainable development. In addressing current governance challenges, he urged Nigerians to exercise patience, likening reforms to the gradual process of building a house, which involves initial hurdles. He acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in technology, real estate, and diplomacy but cautioned against direct comparisons with advanced economies, highlighting the nation’s status as a developing country.

The PDP and APC are Nigeria’s two dominant political parties, with the APC having been in power at the federal level since 2015. Political defections between them are frequent and often reflect strategic realignments, especially in key states like Lagos. As Nigeria’s commercial capital with a population exceeding 20 million, Lagos is a critical political and economic battleground. Da-Silva’s move, driven by policy considerations, may influence APC’s internal dynamics and strategies in the state as it prepares for future electoral contests. His expertise in healthcare and focus on urban development could shape policy discussions within the party.

This defection underscores the fluidity of Nigeria’s political landscape, where experienced figures shift allegiances based on perceived platforms for impact. Da-Silva’s transition highlights the role of ideology and development agendas in political choices, adding to the evolving narrative in Lagos State ahead of election cycles. His next steps likely involve formalizing the defection and engaging with APC structures to advance his vision for state and national progress.
