Wike Hosts Rivers APC Delegates After Asaba Zonal Congress

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, hosted a delegation of senior Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) figures at his Abuja residence on Thursday, a gathering that follows the party’s recent South-South zonal congress.

The meeting included the newly re-elected APC National Vice Chairman for the South-South zone, Victor Giadom, alongside senators, members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, Martins Amaewhule (Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly), state assembly members, and other prominent party leaders from the state. The timing of the meeting, just days after the APC South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Delta State, situates it within the party’s ongoing internal reorganization.

At the Wednesday zonal congress, Giadom retained his position as National Vice Chairman (South-South), while Samuel Nwanosike was elected South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary. These leadership elections are part of a broader effort to solidify the party’s structure across the region ahead of future electoral cycles.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and now a key minister in the federal cabinet, has historically been a dominant political figure in his home state. His decision to host the Rivers APC delegation signals a continued engagement with the party’s internal dynamics, even as the APC currently operates in opposition to the state government controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The choice of venue—his private residence—suggests a consultative, rather than official, meeting focused on strategy and unity.

For the Rivers State APC, which has experienced internal friction in recent years, the coordinated appearance of its chieftains with the influential FCT minister may indicate efforts toward reconciliation and a cohesive approach. Observers note that such high-level discussions often precede major political moves, including candidate selections for upcoming elections or strategies to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence in Rivers.

The meeting underscores the interconnectedness of federal and state-level politics in Nigeria, where relationships across party lines and regions remain fluid. While no official statement was released detailing the agenda, the assembly of these leaders points to a focused dialogue on the APC’s position in Rivers State and the South-South geopolitical zone. The outcomes of such consultations are likely to influence the party’s preparedness for the 2027 general election cycle, particularly in a state as strategically and economically significant as Rivers.
