PTDF screens 5,885 candidates for overseas scholarship — Daily Nigerian

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has commenced interviews for 5,885 shortlisted candidates in its 2026/2027 Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS) for Master’s and PhD awards. The selection process, described as transparent, followed the review of more than 38,000 applications.

Dr. Bello Mustapha, PTDF’s Deputy General Manager for Education and Training, announced the development during the opening of the interview sessions in Abuja. He explained that shortlisted candidates were chosen based on strict criteria, including academic performance, relevant work experience, and overall qualifications. Applicants must hold at least a second-class upper degree, with secondary school results also factored into the evaluation.

The interviews are being conducted simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones: North-central in Abuja, North-East in Bauchi, North-West in Kaduna, South-South in Rivers, South-East in Enugu, and South-West in Oyo. Candidates may attend interviews at any center, regardless of their state of origin.

Dr. Mustapha emphasized that the final selection will adhere to the Federal Character principle to ensure equitable representation across states. The number of successful candidates will depend on available budgetary provisions and management approval. The scholarship scheme primarily covers petroleum-related disciplines, with some supporting programs in management and petroleum law also included.

Several candidates expressed appreciation for the opportunity. Maria Ochanya, a biochemistry graduate, said the scheme would provide a foundation for her planned MSc in Industrial Biotechnology and enable her to contribute to society. Alhaji Ikoh, applying for an MSc in Environmental Science with an architecture background, praised the professional conduct of the process and voiced optimism about studying abroad.

The PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme continues to play a vital role in developing Nigeria’s human capital in the petroleum sector, offering scholars advanced training and research opportunities internationally.
