Kano Governor’s Defection to ADC Worries Bashir Ahmad

Kano State Governor Kabir Ibrahim Gaya has reportedly joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has drawn attention amid ongoing political realignments in Nigeria’s northern region. The development comes as the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano prepares to welcome former governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau into its fold.

Bashir Ahmad, former presidential media aide, expressed disappointment over Gaya’s decision, noting that while he respects the senator’s choice, he had hoped Gaya would remain with the APC to help strengthen the party’s position in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The political shifts in Kano follow the recent defection of former Kano governor and ex-APC presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso to the ADC, a move that has significantly impacted the state’s political landscape. Ahmad had previously lamented the declining strength of the APC in Kano following Kwankwaso’s departure.

The defections highlight the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political alliances, particularly in Kano State, which has historically been a key political battleground. The APC’s efforts to retain influential figures like Gaya, while simultaneously welcoming new members like Shekarau, underscore the party’s attempts to maintain its foothold in the state.

Political analysts suggest these movements could reshape the electoral dynamics in Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, as parties position themselves for future contests. The ADC appears to be gaining momentum in the region, while the APC works to consolidate its base and prevent further defections.

The developments in Kano reflect broader patterns of political realignment occurring across Nigeria as parties prepare for upcoming electoral cycles and seek to strengthen their regional influence.
