Bauchi State caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally rejected any move to admit Governor Bala Mohammed into the party. The decision was announced after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday night, during which members unanimously resolved to block the governor’s potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The caucus, led by Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa, who represents Bauchi North Senatorial District, stated that admitting Mohammed at this time would undermine the party’s internal unity, credibility, and electoral strength in the state. The rejection came amid growing speculation about the governor’s political future following a leadership crisis within the PDP that has left his position increasingly uncertain.
Mohammed had been widely expected to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on March 31, 2026. However, those plans were postponed after he met with the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf. The meeting sparked rumors that the governor might instead be considering joining the ruling party.
In a statement to journalists after the caucus meeting, Senator Dahuwa emphasized that the group had deliberated exhaustively and reached a firm conclusion. He stressed that the APC in Bauchi State would not entertain any move to bring the governor into its fold, citing concerns over the potential disruption to party cohesion ahead of future elections.
The political maneuvering comes at a sensitive time for both major parties in Nigeria. The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions that have weakened its hold in several states, while the APC has been working to consolidate its dominance and prevent further defections that could destabilize its ranks. Bauchi State, with its mixed political loyalties, remains a key battleground in these efforts.
As the situation develops, political analysts are closely watching for any further signals from Mohammed or his camp regarding his next move. For now, the APC’s stance has made clear that any attempt to join the party will face significant resistance from within its Bauchi leadership.
