Autonomous Vehicle Kills Duck in Austin, Raising Safety Concerns

A duck was killed by an autonomous vehicle in the Mueller Lake area of Austin, Texas, prompting local concern over the safety and impact of driverless technology in residential neighborhoods. The incident occurred when an Avride autonomous vehicle, operating in self-driving mode with a human safety operator present, struck and killed a duck that had been nesting near a local Italian restaurant. According to a neighborhood Facebook post reported by local media, the vehicle did not slow down or stop after the collision.

The duck was well known to residents, which has intensified reactions and mistrust toward the technology. Local community members have since taken the bird’s eggs into an incubator to ensure their survival.

Avride confirmed to TechCrunch that its vehicle was in autonomous mode at the time of the incident. While the company has not halted public road testing, it has temporarily excluded certain streets around Mueller Lake from its operational area. The company also disputed claims that the vehicle ran a stop sign, stating that data showed it came to complete and appropriate stops at all relevant intersections.

Avride said it has reviewed vehicle data and replayed the incident in simulation multiple times. The company is now evaluating potential improvements to prevent similar occurrences, including running controlled experiments in simulation to ensure changes do not compromise safety in other scenarios.

The incident has drawn attention amid the growing presence of autonomous vehicle operators in Austin. In addition to Avride, companies such as Zoox, Tesla, and Waymo—operating in partnership with Uber—are testing or commercially deploying robotaxis in the city. The duck’s death has added to ongoing debates about the readiness and regulation of autonomous vehicles in urban environments.
